3/30/2011 - EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Women's contributions past and present were the focus of guest speakers Kristine Parsons and Patricia Gracia at this year's Edwards Women's History Month celebration that took place at Club Muroc, March 24.

Celebrating the history of women's accomplishments started out as a week-long observance in the late 1970s, but because of women's extraordinary undertakings, today the entire month of March has been designated by Congress as National Women's History Month.

Col. Gregory Schwab, 95th Air Base Wing commander, said Edwards is surrounded by accomplished women.

"Women are working here as engineers, doctors, scientists, aviators and much, much more," he told those attending the event.

Both speakers called the celebration an information fair. The theme was "Our History is Our Strength." Mrs. Parsons and Ms. Gracia talked about the roles women played in American history from the birth of the nation through today.

Mrs. Parsons, a long-time Antelope Valley resident and a history teacher at Antelope Valley High School who also teaches civics and economics, was introduced by Master Sgt. Christine Partigianoni, from the Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center Detachment 5.

Mrs. Parsons focused on a word that was new to many - polyphonic - which, she explained is mostly used when talking about music. It means consisting of many voices or sounds. She says American history needs to be more polyphonic when describing women's roles and contributions in history.

"When we look at American history, often times it written in an Anglo-Saxon white male perspective."

She said women were in the west carving out a place in history, but we seldom think of them as anything other than wives and mothers, and American history needs to be written in more voices.

"Women played many important roles in American history, and in addition to seeing them as wives and mothers it's important that we see them as successful businesswomen and leaders as well," she said.

She talked briefly about the early 20th century attitudes about women and how they were told not to worry their pretty little heads about business or politics, and how they were assured their fathers and husbands would handle those kinds of issues.

In the 1800s women weren't allowed to own anything of value. "If they were given money or property as a dowry, it all became their husband's property when they married."

Mrs. Parsons said society has come a long way with its attitude toward women, but said America still has a long way to go, "We rarely hear of women being depicted as intellectual giants," she said.

She spoke of the way the Disney studios portray women and said it's disconcerting to her to think that a little girl watching films like Snow White, Cinderella and The Little Mermaid can grow up thinking that all she has to do is wait for her prince to someday come along and rescue her.

"Women should not be stereotyped like that. We are far more complex."

Mrs. Gracia, the following speaker, immigrated to America from Lima, Peru when she was 18. She developed a vision of how the American dream related to her almost immediately.

"I was drawn to the bright San Diego lights and I told myself that someday I would sit at the center of that energy and draw on it to create my success and the future of others."

She said in her adopted language that didn't take long for her to conquer.

After earning a degree in Public Relations from UCLA, Mrs. Gracia set out to realize her part of the American dream and in 2001 formed her own advertising agency, which she named The Power Media Group.

Following the success of that venture, Mrs. Gracia started another company, The Power Women Business Center, which is described as an incubator for women who want to start their own business.

"You have the vision, we add the power," she said of her company.

Mrs. Gracia said when she first started in business she saw a lot of competition between men and women, so she strived to turn that competition into partnerships. It worked for her. She turned her male counterpart away from a competitive attitude and into a team player and today her business partner is also her life partner, and together they are happily raising their two children in Santa Clarita, Calif.

"Immigrant women entrepreneurs are rapidly making their mark in the U.S. business sector, in every region of the country and across a large range of industries."

She said women of the post-1960s wave of immigration comprise one of the fastest growing groups of business owners in the U.S.

"When you work hard, things will happen," she said.

She advised women everywhere to take advantage of opportunities when they are handed to them.

"Women are making a change, we're no longer here just to raise our children, we're doing it all," she said.

The event closed with Thomas Berard, Air Force Flight Test Center executive director, presenting both speakers with a token of appreciation from both the flight test center and NASA Dryden Research Center for sharing their knowledge and personal experiences.

"I learned two new words today, polyphonic and Latina," he joked with a grin.

On a more serious note Mr. Berard said he doesn't know how anyone can talk about the birth of a nation without talking about women.

"Nothing wrong with having that polyphonic view, we all need to recognize the role of women in our nation," he said and reminded everyone that the second highest civilian position on base is held by a woman, Eileen Bjorkman, who is the AFFTC technical advisor.

Ninety percent of marketers believe social media to be important

Debate in the business marketing and advertising world has continued over the actual utility of social media to companies. Does it really create consumer engagement and produce a significant return on investment, or are companies just sending out content that no one reads?

social media Social Media The Fun Way! 4 Hr Digital Class
In an attempt to answer this question, Social Media Examiner recently released the 2011 Social Media Marketing Industry Report, which found that professional marketers find the medium to be extremely useful if employed properly.

According to the study, 90 percent of marketers said that the channel was important to achieving business success. However, nearly two-thirds (63 percent) of respondents who have been in the social media world for more then 3 years said they spend more than 10 hours per week on it.

Interpreting these results, the website Business 2 Community suggests that they could mean that social media is an advertising channel that takes time to mature and show results.

It further suggests spreading time and resources around so that while companies are waiting for their social media efforts to begin showing returns they aren't neglecting other fronts.

Most Marketers Keep Social Media In-house

Most Marketers Keep Social Media In-house

social-outsourcing-apr-2011.JPGRoughly seven in 10 (72%) marketers who engage in social media marketing efforts do not outsource those efforts, according to the “2011 Social Media Marketing Report” from SocialMedia Examiner. However, SocialMedia Examiner notes the number of those who are outsourcing social media efforts has doubled since 2010, from 14% to 28%.

Design/Development Most Often Outsourced

social-outsourcing-tasks-apr-2011.JPGAmong marketers who do outsource social media marketing efforts, the most commonly outsourced task is design/development, which 17% say they outsource. MarketingCharts observes that the other most commonly outsourced tasks, such as content creation (10%) and analytics (10%), can also be considered “behind the scenes” functions. “Real time” functions such as community management (4%) and live tweeting (3%) are less likely to be outsourced.

8 in 10 Social Marketers Use Email

social-other-forms-mktg-apr-2011.JPGThe study asked social media marketers what other types of marketing they were participating in. The top three included email marketing (81%), search engine optimization (68%) and event marketing (64%).
SocialMedia Examiner analysis indicates B2B marketers were significantly more likely to employ search engine optimization (71% B2B compared to 65% B2C) and event marketing (70% B2B compared to 58% B2C). Organizations with 1,000 or more employees were more likely to participate in event marketing (73%).
In addition, social media marketers with three or more years of experience were more likely to participate in search engine optimization (80%) and event marketing (79%) than the overall respondent group.

9 in 10 Marketers Use Facebook

Nine in 10 marketers (92%) use the Facebook social network as a marketing tool, according to other study results. Data indicates Facebook is the most popular social network among marketers by a wide margin. The second-most-popular social network among marketers, Twitter, has an 84% adoption rate, meaning Facebook is almost 10% more popular than its closest competitor as a marketing tool.
The professional networking site LinkedIn comes in third with 71% marketer adoption. Rather than a specific network, blogs follow with 68% usage, and YouTube/other video sites are used by 56% of marketers.
There is a substantial dropoff of more than 50% between the marketer adoption rates of YouTube/other video sites and their closest competitor, social bookmarking/news sites, used by only 26% of marketers. MySpace comes in last with only 6% adoption as a marketing tool.
About the Data: In January 2011, SocialMedia Examiner posted a survey link on Twitter, which was reposted on other social media networks including Facebook and LinkedIn. SocialMedia Examiner also emailed a list of 50,000 marketers. After 10 days, the survey was closed with 3,342 participants.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Small businesses seeking to grow their businesses and create jobs through exporting can turn to new, free educational videos created through a partnership between the U.S. Small Business Administration, Inc. Magazine and AT&T.
Through the public-private partnership, a series of video modules has been developed to inspire and encourage American small businesses to actively pursue exporting and to educate them on how to do so.

Charlie Sheen Has the Best Web Marketing Strategy of 2011

Charlie Sheen’s use of technology and web 2.0 has earned him big dollars and a ‘winning’ formula for his own personal brand.
The Two And A Half Men star has greatly benefited from his own ability to embrace the internet, exploring all the marketing tools available to him. From breaking a twitter record, to hosting his own internet show on Ustream, the actor has done what few in Hollywood have ever achieved. Parody videos created by fans and websites dedicated to his one-liners are giving the actor non-stop free promotion and this in turn has created an audience of marketers for Charlie Sheen.
His infamous ABC interview gave birth to many of the viral video spoofs we have seen of his ‘radical’ behavior, which in turn, has fueled his twitter fan growth, and other media interview requests. With so many people discussing and sharing his antics, his own brand of controversy has been implanted onto the web, and has helped him sell tickets for his tour dates.
On top of that, Sheen’s regular updates with his fans on twitter provide a direct relationship and route to market. Sure that sounds a little cold, but he does have a following he can reach out to about his products.
Looking at what he did this week, Sheen took the next step in his own web fueled marketing campaign by making a self-parody video. This clever twist gave yet another viral hit to his name, as bloggers and social media re-posted and discussed how outrageous it was to see him spoof himself.
With many dates left on Charlie Sheen’s tour, the actor has a non-stop ‘Bi-Winning’ 24/7 marketing campaign, and other celebrities in the entertainment industry should learn from his online success.

9 in 10 Marketers Use Social Media / 6 in 10 Marketers Use Social Media 6-plus Hrs Weekly

9 in 10 Marketers Use Social Media

socialmedia-mktg-apr-2011.JPG
Ninety-three percent of marketers use social media to market their businesses, according to a new survey from SocialMedia Examiner. Data from “2011 Social Media Marketing Report” also indicates a significant 90% of marketers said that social media is important to their businesses.

Half of SocNet Marketers Have Less than 1 Yr Experience

socmedia-mktg-time-experience-apr2011.JPG
About half of marketers engaging in social networking (49%) have less than one year of social media marketing experience. Another 39% have been using it for one to three years, with 11% having more than three years of experience and only 2% having no experience (figures total more than 100% due to rounding).
In addition, study data indicates more B2B companies have been using social media longer (52.6% reported one year or more) than their B2C counterparts (46.2% indicated 1 year or longer). In 2010, only 31% of marketers were using social media for one or more years. Now that number has grown 61% to 50%.

6 in 10 Marketers Use Social Media 6-plus Hrs Weekly

socmedia-mktg-time-commitment-apr-2011.JPG
A significant 58% of marketers are using social media for six hours or more each week, and 34% for 11 or more hours weekly. It’s also interesting to note that 15% of marketers spend more than 20 hours each week on social media.
Furthermore, study data shows marketers with more years of social media experience spend more time each week conducting social media activities. For example, 63% of people with three or more years of experience spend more than 10 hours a week doing social media activities, making them 53% more likely than the 41% of marketers with one to three years of experience who spend that much time.

Younger Marketers Spend More Social Media Time

socmedia-mktg-time-age-apr-2011.JPG
Perhaps not surprisingly, younger marketers tend to spend more time engaging in social media activities than their older peers. Marketers aged 20 to 29 years spend more time than other age groups using social media marketing (with 41% spending 11-plus hours weekly), followed by 30-to-39-year-olds (37% spending 11-plus hours per week).

Almost All Social Marketers Cite Exposure

socialmedia-benefits-apr-2011.JPG
A significant 88% of all marketers indicated that their social media efforts have generated more exposure for their businesses. Improving traffic and subscribers was the second major benefit, with 72% reporting positive results.
In addition, nearly two-thirds (62%) of marketers indicated a rise in search engine rankings was a benefit of social media marketing. Slightly more than half of marketers (51%) found social media generated qualified leads.
Less than half (49%) said social media efforts reduced overall marketing expenses. However, SocialMedia Examiner predicts that as search engine rankings improve, so will business exposure and lead generation efforts, and overall marketing expenses will decrease. Improved sales were the least-cited benefit, with 43% of marketers attributing this result to their social media efforts.

Janrain: Social Sign-in Produces Benefits

Allowing online consumers to conduct social sign-in (SSI) for an e-commerce site rather than create a new user account can produce higher levels of spending and customer satisfaction, according to a recent survey from social user management platform provider Janrain and Blue Research. Data from “Importance of Identity Solutions” indicates that during the 2010 holiday season, 21% of those who consider social sign-in desirable (fans) expected to spend more than in 2009, compared to 16% of critics.
In addition, 64% of fans expected to spend more than $500 during the 2010 holiday season, compared to 61% of critics. Sixty-six percent of survey respondents were classified as fans and 34% as critics.

Musicians Have Most Twitter Followers

Musicians Have Most Twitter Followers

twitalyzer-most-popular-apr-2011.JPGFive of the 10 most-followed Twitter users are primarily famous for being musical performers, according to a ranking by social media analysis service Twitalyzer. All of the 10 most popular users are celebrities from the world of entertainment or politics, rather than technology personalities or online celebrities such as bloggers or social networkers.

Gaga, Bieber Lead the Pack

The two most-followed Twitter users are musical performers who have gained fame within the past few years. Lady Gaga is number one with almost 9.1 million followers, with Justin Bieber coming in second with about 8.3 million followers. It is worth noting that Bieber, rather than following more traditional routes to a musical career, first got noticed by posting videos of himself performing on the social network MySpace.com.
In addition, musical performers Britney Spears (number four), Katy Perry (number eight) and Taylor Swift (number nine) made the list.

They Are Women, Hear Them Roar

Seven of the top 10 most-followed Twitter users are women. Only three are men: President Barack Obama (number three), actor Ashton Kutcher (number six), and Bieber.

Youth Will Be Served

Six of the 10 most-followed Twitter users are age 30 (like reality TV star Kim Kardashian, who some also consider a pop singer, at number five) or younger. Bieber is the youngest person on the list, having recently turned 17.
Kutcher just misses the 30-and-younger cut, having turned 33 in February. Talk show host and media magnate Oprah Winfrey is the oldest at 57, followed by 53-year-old talk show host/comedian Ellen DeGeneres and 49-year-old Obama (who by Constitutional guidelines must be at least 35 years of age).

Born in the USA

While Twitalyzer ranks Twitter users by global followers, nine of the 10 most-followed personalities are from the US. All 10 are North American, as Canadian Bieber is the only non-US-citizen on the list (MarketingCharts will ignore the “birther” claims about Obama’s supposedly nebulous country of origin).

Other Findings

  • Of the non-musicians on the list, all but Obama are most famous for acting in TV shows or movies. No pro athletes made the list.

  • Eight of the 10 most-followed Twitter users are white. Two (Obama, Winfrey) are African-American.

  • Lady Gaga has about 800,000 more followers than Bieber, who has about 1.1 million more followers than Obama. There is no gap of more than roughly 400,000 followers between any two adjoining members of the list.

  • Nielsen: Celeb SocNet Followers Valuable to Brands

Sixty-four percent of adult US internet users who follow a celebrity via a social network such as Facebook or Twitter also follow a brand, meaning the celebrity follower is four times more likely to follow a brand than the average US adult online, according to new Nielsen Company data. Fans of celebrities are also valuable consumers in other areas of online, particularly when it comes to making transactions or purchases.

Does Latino Marketing Deserve a Bigger Pie?

For some time now, Latino marketers have been frustrated with the reluctance of advertisers to spend more on digital when study after study shows that Latinos out-index other groups on practically every aspect of technology adoption. The current Latino advertising spend is $5 billion, across all media - broadcast, print, and digital. Yet only 4 percent of that spend - $200 million - is going to digital.
Two months ago, Google hosted a forum to discuss its new direction in Latino marketing; it attracted more than 300 vendors, advertisers, and Latino digerati. And the response from my peers was effusive.
Which raises the questions: Can Google - the biggest technology brand in digital marketing - go where no other company has gone before? Can it persuade advertisers to take a closer look at this thing called Latino digital?
Google might have a shot at this opportunity - which is both about market leadership and thought leadership - because it enjoys a few hard-to-match market advantages: a unique place in the new digital marketing stack; a unique access to data that matters to advertisers; and a unique time in the evolution of the Latino digital marketing category where leadership in the technology arena has been lacking. But recently I've seen that there are a few bigger, unspoken questions on the minds of advertisers who have been slow to warm up to the market.
Should There Be a Latino Pie in the First Place?
I get this question quite often, and not only from traditional advertisers. In an age where digital has enabled marketers to attract, engage, and mobilize people around shared interests, demographic-driven marketing seems way outdated. A great piece of the Latin American population has so much in common with the general population that it seems shortsighted to "target" them discretely. In fact, if you add up all the dollars spent reaching Latinos in general marketing campaigns, the total Latino advertising spend would go way beyond the $5 billion estimate. The fact is, many marketers do both - general and discrete advertising - and that trend is very much in favor of doing both. For market indicators, look at the media (CNN, Fox News), politics (Newt Gingrich's The Americano), and the CPG market (Kraft, General Mills), and you can see the principle in action. More and more, marketers are coming to see that producing content that is targeted and culturally relevant can be an effective way of engaging people with shared values. And, note, when we say culture, we don't necessarily mean language. Most of these programs are in English. As a number of marketers have noted, Latino marketing today is more about values than language.
    If Yes, How Big?
As much as marketers grouse about the tiny current Latino digital spend ($200 million), the total current advertising spend ($5 billion) also deserves some scrutiny. But another number that marketers love to cite is the $1.3 trillion-plus in buying power that Latinos will have by 2015 (reported by Packaged Facts). So, is $5 billion enough? According to Outsell, the total U.S. general advertising spend was $365 billion. With Latinos now representing roughly 10 percent of U.S. buying power, one might argue that the Latino spend should be closer to $36 billion. That number certainly can't hold up - as I noted above, a good deal of the general advertising spend goes to reaching Latinos indirectly. Still, the delta between $5 billion and $36 billion is big enough that people in advertising should care. And as the U.S. Latino continues to grow as a percentage of the overall population, more advertisers will definitely care.
How Much of That Pie Should Go to Digital?
So it's reasonable to assume that there should be a pie, and that the pie should be bigger. How big a slice should digital get? Let's start with Google's view. At a recent event in New York, executives for Google Hispanic suggested that the number should be closer to 12 percent - $600 million - which, as Advertising Age's Chiqui Cartagena noted, "corresponds to the…usage of the medium by Hispanic consumers." That's 8 percent higher than the current figure (4 percent). But perhaps this is still too small. At the same event, Google released a report that found 78 percent of Latinos use the "Internet as their primary source of information, above TV and friends and family."
Again, we're looking at a delta that deserves close attention. And it's not just that digital is becoming the preferred mode of communication among Latinos. It's also about the future of marketing. Along with the many studies documenting the rise of Latino technology adoption, there have been a number of opinion pieces about the new role of digital in marketing campaigns, Latino and non-Latino alike. In many cases, digital is no longer just a part of the marketing mix. Increasingly, digital is the lead. And with Latinos outperforming other groups in digital adoption, they are a big part of that story. It's one reason that so many Latino marketers are excited to see Google show up; it's recognition for the role that Latinos are playing and will continue to play.
In the meantime, whether it's a pragmatic spend today, or a strategic investment for tomorrow, expect digital to get a larger slice from an increasingly larger pie. Both slice and pie are going to get bigger.

Google Android Market Share Jumps 27% in 3 Mos.

Google Android Market Share Jumps 27% in 3 Mos.

comscore-share-of-smartphone-market-by-platform-nov10-vfeb11-apr11.gifGoogle’s share of the US smartphone market (primarily representing the Android platform) climbed 27% between the three months ending November 2010 and three months ending February 2011, according to new comScore MobiLens data. Google increased its smartphone platform share in that time period from 26% to 33%.

    Google Gains at RIM’s Expense

Google gained most of its smartphone platform marketshare at the expense of RIM, maker of the Blackberry platform. RIM lost almost 14% of its share between November 2010 and February 2011, dropping from 33.5% to 28.9%. RIM maintained a narrowing lead over number three Apple. There were no other significant changes in marketshare among the other three smartphone platforms in the top five.
However, Google built on a trend begun in January 2011, when for the first time it displaced RIM, claiming the top spot with a 31.2% share, up almost 33% from 23.5% in October 2010. Meanwhile, RIM lost 15% of its US smartphone platform share in the same time period, dropping from 35.8% to 30.4%. The other leading US smartphone platform provider, Apple, remained almost flat in percentage by going from 24.6% to 24.7% market share. However, this incremental increase was not enough to keep Apple from dropping from second to third place.
General US smartphone ownership grew dramatically between November 2010 and February 2011, with 69.5 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones during the three months ending in February 2011, up 13% from 65.8 million during the preceding three-month period.

    Apple Shows Most OEM Growth

comscore-mobile-oem-mar-2011.JPGFor the three-month average period ending in February 2011, 234 million Americans ages 13 and older used mobile devices, flat from the three months ending in January 2011. Although it maintained its fifth-place spot, Apple saw the strongest gain, up almost 14% to account for 7.5% of subscribers, on what comScore calls momentum from the release of the Verizon iPhone, the most acquired handset in the month of February.
The other OEMs saw little change, with Samsung retaining its top spot. RIM slightly lost share but still led Apple in fourth place.

    Mobile Content Usage Up

comscore-mobile-content-mar-20111.JPGIn February 2011, all forms of mobile content usage tracked by comScore showed higher rates of activity than in November 2010. For example, 68.8% of US mobile subscribers used text messaging on their mobile device, up 2.5% from 67.1%. Browsers were used by 38.4% of subscribers, up 9% from 35.3%, while downloaded applications were used by 36.6% of the mobile audience, up almost 10% from 33.4%.
In addition, accessing of social networking sites or blogs increased 13%, growing from 25.3% to 26.8% of mobile subscribers. Playing games increased 9%, from 22.6% to 24.6%of the mobile audience, while listening to music represented 17.5%, up almost 17% from 15% three months earlier.

    Google Android Rises 267% YOY

Google Android’s share of the US smartphone market has risen an impressive 267% from February 2010, when it ranked fourth with a 9% share. RIM, number one at that time, held a 42.1% share, meaning it has lost about 31%, or nearly one-third, of its market share in the past year.
About the Data: The comScore MobiLens study surveyed more than 30,000 U.S. mobile subscribers

    Advertising Goes Social

Local agencies, big and small, are hopping on the social media train with lots of hires and increasing revenue.

For one hour on two days in April last year -- the noon hour, to be specific -- the newspaper and magazine websites of 27 publications, along with TMZ.com, were ad-free, except for a link to the Chipotle Facebook page, where viewers learned they were getting a break from junk advertising and junk food.
Designed to stress Chipotle's commitment to additive-free meat, organic produce and small family farmers, the advertising strategy was the work of Compass Point Media, part of the Campbell Mithun ad agency, which bought up all the ad space on those websites for that hour on behalf of Chipotle.
The move demonstrates the length to which marketers will go into the ever-growing, ever-changing digital and social world to get their brands in front of potential customers -- and perhaps the sales that go along with it.
For Chipotle the "Junk Free Lunch" worked.
"We saw same-store sales increase 9 percent last year. We more than doubled the number of Facebook fans," said Chris Arnold, director of communications for the popular Denver-based fast food chain, noting that not all of those results could be directly traced to the Junk Free Lunch campaign. "It was a good program for us."

    Evolving at warp speed
Digital and social marketing have been around a good part of the decade, but only in recent years has it begun to accelerate at mind-boggling speeds.
Evolving technology -- think smartphones that seemingly add a new "G" monthly and tablet-based devices like the iPad -- has revolutionized the way advertisers can reach consumers. It's like putting a laptop in someone's pocket.
Ad agencies have taken notice and responded in kind.
Campbell Mithun, which used a Twitter contest last month to select six interns for the summer, expects the digital media billings by Compass Point Media to increase by 67 percent this year.
"We have a Facebook specialist. We have a content specialist. We have a listening specialist," said Chris Wexler, Compass Point's group planning director. "The market is so complex. But we're not looking for clicks. We're talking about moving products off shelves."
At Colle+McVoy, digital work has grown from 5 percent of total output to 40 percent in five years. In the past year alone, the Minneapolis agency added 15 digital specialists to its workforce, bringing its total of specialists to 50.
The digital team at Periscope exceeds 40, up more than a third from three years ago. Indeed Periscope last week launched an integrated marketing campaign for Papa Murphy's Pizza that, in addition to print, television and radio, includes two advertisements on YouTube as well as entries on Papa Murphy's website and Facebook page urging consumers to "Join the take n' bake revolution."
"The iPhone changed everything in 2007," said Periscope's Doug Nichols. "The iPad changed everything again. We're seen huge growth across all sectors."

    Feeling guilty
Even smaller agencies are enjoying the fruits of the digital marketplace.
Morsekode, a marketing agency in Bloomington, is planning on doubling its 19-employee workforce in a time when many small marketing agencies are closing up shop. In 2010 alone, Morsekode's revenue grew by more than 40 percent.
"We keep seeing other agencies close and feel guilty, because we're not experiencing any of that here," said Mark Morse, founder and the Morsekode agency principal.
Part of its success is based on the agency's dedication to incorporating digital marketing into campaigns, now possible because of an in-house division of Morsekode called Brand Motion.
Brand Motion, which began in 2008, is a digital media production department within the agency that has the capacity to produce video content, design Adobe Flash-animated websites, and develop apps for clients.
The use of video and websites is a proven method for increasing customer interest in a product, said John Purdy, clinical professor at the University of St. Thomas Communications and Journalism Department.
"Using video can allow for more of an emotional bond for a consumer," Purdy said. "Videos can have scenery, setting, maybe some plot. It's like the move from print to television advertising."
A Forrester Research report called the rise in online video-consumption "profound," concluding that 60 percent of Internet users watch some form of video whenever they surf the Web, up from 41 percent in 2007.

    Not everyone's convinced
But for some companies, the jury is still out on the social media aspect of digital marketing. A survey of marketers by the World Federation of Advertisers and the research firm Millward Brown found that only 23 percent of respondents were convinced that they were getting a good return on their social media investment while 18 percent said the return was average and 9 percent described their return as poor.
Nonetheless, all but one of the 24 surveyed marketers said they expect to increase their time and money spent on social media in the coming year.

But social media advertising is only one aspect of the digital marketing world.
Morsekode, for instance, applied its technical savvy to a new mobile scan-tag campaign for EcoWater systems, the manufacturer of Whirlpool products. Customers soon will be able to use their smartphone to scan a Microsoft scan tag, which will then pull up a micro-website on their phone where they can read product information, use the interactive online rebate, watch videos featuring the product or read customer reviews.
"It really takes a lot of weight off of the sales personnel in the store," Morse said. "A lot of clients are becoming interested in this technology and leveraging it."
"We've been very happy with the content Morsekode has developed and the traffic they've generated for us so far," said Marty Christiansen, vice president of retail sales for St. Paul-based EcoWater Systems.
Does the rapid growth in digital advertising mean the beginning of the end for more traditional print and broadcast avenues?
Not really, said Compass Point's Harvin Furman, the director of market investments. "For years we've been hearing how digital will kill TV, but last year TV consumption was at an all-time high."
    Wexler agreed.
"The last telegraph was sent in 2009," he said of the 19th-century breakthrough communications technology. "It takes a long time for media to die."

For Activists, Tips on Safe Use of Social Media

FROM Cairo to Madison, Wis., much has been made about the positive role technology has played in helping galvanize and organize populist movements.

The downside? Like the dreaded telescreen in George Orwell’s “1984,” technologies like the Internet and cellphones are proving just as useful for spying as they are for communicating, making the choice to hit “call” or “send” an increasingly risky one.
But several groups of free information advocates have emerged to help educate the latest generation of activists. To that end, one such group, Access, just released its guide to maintaining online and mobile phone security, with versions in Arabic and English.
Brett Solomon, the executive director of Access, said that the guide was created in part from recognition that people often lose sight of security concerns amid the collective euphoria that can accompany swift, large-scale democratization movements like the ones in Egypt and Tunisia. “The eye gets focused on the goal and not the process,” he said, “and during that time, they put their own personal security and their network security at risk.”
But it’s not just the fog of enthusiasm that renders people vulnerable; it’s lack of experience. “There’s actually a whole new group of people who have emerged from being citizens to becoming activists, some of them reluctantly,” Mr. Solomon said. “They’re not necessarily aware of the dangers that are associated with being active online.”
Those dangers have become increasingly apparent in recent months.
Facebook accounts were hacked in Tunisia. In Egypt, authorities shut down the Internet and cellphones, and employed technology that turned mobile phones into furtive listening devices, according to the guide.
The Access guide provides tips for keeping communications safer in such a climate. It recommends Gmail, for example, because it uses a secure connection by default, known as HTTPS, like at banking Web sites; Hotmail provides HTTPS as an option, and Facebook began offering it in January. The guide also explains how to disguise browsing histories and how to gain access to banned sites.
Security isn’t just a concern in Middle East autocracies, or for would-be revolutionaries. Mobile phone surveillance, for example, is tough to escape for cellphone users anywhere, said Ethan Zuckerman, senior researcher at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard Law School, and a founder of Global Voices, a worldwide group of bloggers and interpreters that has produced similarly themed guides.
Mr. Zuckerman regularly advises Access, as do Chris Hughes, one of Facebook’s founders; the rock musician Peter Gabriel, and the MoveOn.org board president Eli Pariser.
“In general, most users aren’t aware of the extent to which mobile phones can be monitored by telcos in cooperation with governments,” Mr. Zuckerman said, referring to telecommunications companies.
“If the guide reminds people that mobile phones are inherently insecure and that we’re trading off privacy and convenience in using the devices, it would be a useful outcome from the work,” he said.

New, Higher Limits for Bond Guarantees To Assist in Recovery Efforts Following Disasters

Changes to Regulations also Affect Timber Sales Contracts
WASHINGTON – The U.S. Small Business Administration has made regulatory changes to its Surety Bond Guarantee (SBG) program, including higher surety bond guarantee limits that will help construction and service sector firms secure larger contracts for work in areas impacted by disasters.
The changes are related to the Small Business Disaster Response and Loan Improvements Act of 2008, which increases the eligible amount for contracts or orders related to a major disaster area.
The changes, which were originally published as part of a Proposed Rule in The Federal Register in April 2010, are now final and include:
    • For a non-federal contract or order up to $5 million, a bond guarantee may be issued if the products will be manufactured or the services performed in the disaster area.
    • For a federal contract or order up to $5 million, the performance site can be outside the disaster area if the contract or order will directly assist the disaster recovery efforts.
    • For a federal contract or order, the amount of the guarantee can be as much as $10 million at the request of the head of an agency that is involved in reconstruction efforts.

“SBA is committed to mobilizing resources as quickly as possible following disasters to help begin economic recovery for communities, businesses and families,” SBA Administrator Karen Mills said. “These changes to the Surety Bond Program will have a two-fold impact. Helping small businesses compete for and win contracting opportunities gives them the chance to grow and create jobs, while at the same time jump-starting economic activity and rebuilding efforts following a disaster when communities and regions need it most.”
The increased amounts would apply during the 12 months following the disaster declaration, unless SBA provides for an extension related to a particular disaster.
In addition to the disaster related changes, other changes clarify SBA’s position that it does not cover any costs related to insurance or indemnification requirements that may be contained in the bonded contract. It specifically excludes from the losses covered by SBA any costs that arise from the principal’s failure to secure and maintain insurance that result from any claims or judgments that exceed the amount of insurance coverage, and that arise from an agreement by the principal to indemnify the contractor or any other persons.
Surety Bond Guarantee (SBG) program regulations also have been amended to allow SBA to guarantee bid and performance bonds for timber sale contracts. Under these contracts, the small business pays the project owner an agreed amount to harvest the lumber or other forest products, such as biomass. A bond is often required to ensure compliance with contract terms and conditions associated with forest management, including the protection of natural resources, erosion control, and road maintenance. This change applies to contracts administered by the U.S. Forest Service and other public and private entities.
SBA partners with the surety industry to help small businesses that would otherwise be unable to obtain bonding in the traditional commercial marketplace. Under the partnership, SBA provides a guarantee to the participating surety company of between 70 and 90 percent of the bond amount. Through its Surety Bond Guarantee program, SBA also helps owners by guaranteeing bid, payment and performance bonds to protect the project owner against financial loss if a contractor defaults or fails to perform.
SBA assistance in locating a participating surety company or agent, and completing application forms, is available online. For more information on SBA’s Surety Bond Guarantee program, including Surety Office contacts, go online to http://www.sba.gov/osg/, or call 1-800-U-ASK-SBA.

95% of US Adults Plan Food Savings Strategy

95% of US Adults Plan Food Savings Strategy

couponscom-using-coupons-apr-2011.JPGApproximately 99% of US adults are aware of rising food prices, according to a new survey conducted by Harris Interactive and commissioned by Coupons.com. The vast majority (95%) plans to employ at least one savings strategy at the grocery store as a result,

    Coupons Most Popular Cost-cutting Activity

The survey found that incorporating coupons was the most popular planned activity to offset rising food prices, cited by nearly three-quarters (72%) of respondents. This strategy was followed by other cost-cutting actions, including comparing unit prices of package sizes (71%) and shopping at discount grocery stores (66%). The study also identified other popular planned behaviors, including stocking up when items reach rock-bottom prices (64%) and buying in bulk (57%), among others.

7 in 10 Will Compare and Save

About seven in 10 (71%) of all US adults plan to compare unit prices to help offset rising food prices. College graduates are significantly more likely to employ this tactic than those who attended or completed high school or attended some college.

    Higher Education, Higher Savings

Better educated adults are particularly aggressive in their cost-saving strategies. Adults with college degrees are not only 53% more likely to plan to use coupons than those without high school degrees (78% compared to 51%), but they also plan to use other savings tactics more frequently, including being 26% more likely to compare unit prices (83% compared to 66%) and about 48% more likely to buy in bulk (62% compared to 42%).

    Men, Women Save Differently

Men and women plan on taking different approaches when it comes to saving money on food, according to the study. Compared to men, women are 18% more likely to use coupons to offset rising food prices (78% compared to 66%). They are also 12% more likely than men to compare unit prices of package sizes (75% compared to 67%) and 13% more likely to stock up on goods when they reach rock-bottom prices (68% compared to 60%).

Consumer Interest in Digital Coupons Rises

Representing more than 16% of the US population, more than 49 million American consumers are now using online coupons, up about 9% from 45 million in 2009, according to other recent data from Coupons.com. Of the 49 million online coupon users, almost one-third (14.8 million) has not read or looked into the Sunday newspaper within the prior six months, a 13% increase from 13.1 million in 2008.
Research also indicates 73% of all US shoppers have used online printable web coupons to date. Furthermore, reflective of trends in the consumer vernacular, internet queries for coupons and related terms increased significantly on search engines during the year. Specifically, searches on Google for “Digital Coupons” and “Printable Coupons” increased 200% and 170%, respectively.
About the Data: This survey was conducted by phone within the United States by Harris Interactive on behalf of Coupons.com from March 4-7, 2011 among 1,010 adults ages 18 and older. Results were weighted to reflect the US adult population.

Boost Best in Non-contract Wireless Satisfaction

Boost Best in Non-contract Wireless Satisfaction

jd-power-wireless-noncontract-apr-20111.JPGBoost Mobile ranks highest in overall US customer satisfaction among non-contract wireless customers and achieves a score of 808, compared to the industry average of 765, according to J.D. Power and Associates 2011 U.S. Wireless Non-Contract Customer Satisfaction Index Study. Boost Mobile performs particularly well in four of the six factors that drive overall satisfaction: cost of service; account management; initial activation; and offerings and promotions.

5 Other Carriers Beat Industry Average

Also ranking above the industry average are MetroPCS, TracFone, NET10, Virgin Mobile and T-Mobile, respectively. The study measures customer satisfaction with current non-contract wireless service across six key factors (listed in order of importance): performance and reliability (31%); cost of service (21%); account management (17%); initial activation (12%); offerings and promotions (12%); and customer service (7%).

Higher Satisfaction Leads to Addl. Purchases

The study also finds that higher satisfaction levels may drive wireless customers to purchase additional products and services. In 2011, 53% of non-contract customers say they are likely to purchase additional products or services offered by their current carrier during the next six months, while 47% say they are content with their current plan and equipment.
Overall satisfaction scores are 90 index points higher, on average, among customers willing to spend more money on additional purchases, compared with customers opting to continue with their current plan (807 compared to 717, respectively).

    Monthly Plan Popularity Grows Dramatically

The study finds that product offerings in the non-contract segment have changed dramatically during the past several years, with many wireless carriers increasing the offerings of monthly plans, some mimicking traditional contract plans, while others have unlimited calling and texting. Currently, 49% of non-contract plan customers have monthly plans, compared with less than 30% in 2008, more than a 50% increase.
J.D. Power analysis indicates the increase in the prevalence of monthly plans can be partly attributed to a combination of cost savings and service offerings, and also to improved overall satisfaction due to positive recommendations from existing customers. In 2011, overall satisfaction among monthly service plan customers is comparable to satisfaction among those who use pay-as-you-go plans (762 on a 1,000-point scale compared to 768, on average). In 2009, the difference in overall satisfaction between monthly customers and pay-as-you-go customers averaged 14 points.

    Other Findings

The study also finds the following key non-contract wireless usage patterns:
    • Pay-as-you-go customers spend an average of $37 for each airtime purchase in 2011, an increase of about 6% from $35 in 2010.
    • Monthly non-contract customers spend an average of 35% less per month than do customers with contracts. Monthly non-contract customers spend $60 per month, compared with an average monthly service cost of $92 for customers with service contracts.
    • Overall, non-contract customers use 326 minutes per month, on average. Pay-as-you-go customers use an average of just 180 minutes per month, while monthly non-contract customers use an average of 489 minutes per month; an increase of approximately 11% from about 439 minutes in 2010.
    • Among customers currently under contract with a postpaid carrier and who say they are likely to switch their carrier during the next year, nearly four in 10 (38%) are likely to choose non-contract service.

Apple Shines in Smartphone OEM Satisfaction

For a fifth consecutive time, Apple ranks highest among manufacturers of smartphones in customer satisfaction with a score of 795 (out of 1,000) and performs particularly well in ease of operation, operating system, features and physical design, according to the recent J.D. Power and Associates 2011 U.S. Wireless Smartphone Customer Satisfaction Study, Volume 1 and the J.D. Power and Associates 2011 U.S. Wireless Traditional Mobile Phone Satisfaction Study, Volume 1. Apple performs particularly well in ease of operation, operating system, features and physical design; and Motorola (763) and HTC (762) follow Apple in the smartphone rankings.
About the Data: The 2011 U.S. Wireless Non-Contract Customer Satisfaction Index Study measures customer satisfaction with current non-contract wireless service. The study, published by J.D. Power & Associates, is based on responses from 6,436 wireless customers who currently subscribe to non-contract service plans and is the source of the enclosed chart. Findings are based on a continuous fielding period between July and December 2010.

Top Viral Videos - March 2011

Common themes of humor, children and sports, as well as interactivity, highlighted many of the the 10 most-shared online videos tracked by Unruly Media during March 2011. For the second straight month, the top video was a Volkswagen ad originally aired during the February 2011 Super Bowl broadcast, featuring a little boy dressed as “Star Wars” villain Darth Vader and combining humor with feel-good cutesiness and pop culture.

    Can’t Get Enough Roller Babies

The number nine video, another spot combining humor with adorable small children, is perennial favorite “Roller Babies” from French bottled water manufacturer Evian. Using CGI to create the appearance of infants on roller blades, this video has been included in the Top 10 viral video lists compiled by Unruly Media since October 2010.
In addition, a video of a St. Patrick’s Day flash mob that performed traditional Irish step dancing in a Sydney, Australia train station this year featured numerous children, as well as adult members of the “Riverdance” professional dance company.

Sports of All Types Draw Viewers

As is usually the case, sports-themed videos were also prominently featured on the March 2011 Top 10 list. A video of extreme biker Danny MacAskill and two videos featuring stunt driving from DC Shoes made the list (these also have been regulars on the Top 10 list for several months), as well as a video from adidas that includes sports of the extreme, amateur and professional varieties, as well as segments highlighting music, fashion and imagery that would suit an action film.

    Interactive Humor Makes the Cut

Two videos combining interactivity with humor also were featured on the March 2011 top 10 viral video list. One, an ad for Skittles candy, invites the viewer to place their finger on the screen to be licked by a cat (with a twist ending). The other, an ad for European correction fluid Tipp-Ex, features two obnoxious hunters confronted by a bear, and lets the viewer choose their own ending.
